- Our Story | Ukiah Natural Foods Co-op
Story and store tour about Ukiah Natural Foods Co-op LET'S EAT LOCAL TOGETHER About Shop Online Ways to Save Departments Community Membership Board Of Directors Recipes More It all started back in the mid-'70s when a group of "back to the land"-ers formed a buying club in Ukiah, CA. In 1976 the retail store was incorporated as the Homestead Exchange which is still the official name of the Co-op although we do business as Ukiah Natural Foods Co-op. Once incorporated the Co-op operated out of a garage off of Gobbi St. and as demand grew moved to a larger site at 308B E. Perkins. The Co-op continued to fill a need that was vital to the community and in 1998 moved to our current location at 721 South State St. In 2021 the Co-op completed an expansion and remodel which added 5,782 square feet of additional space featuring food services, a café seating area, office space, and restrooms. Through all of the changes and growth, the Co-op has always maintained the mission, vision, and commitment to our core values. Land Acknowledgment We respectfully acknowledge that we live, learn, and work on the traditional homelands of numerous Indigenous peoples. We honor the deep and enduring connection these communities have to this land—their ancestral past, cultural traditions, and continuing presence. We recognize and give thanks to the Northern Pomo Tribes, who have cared for and stewarded this land for generations. We also acknowledge the presence and significance of tribes that are no longer federally recognized or whose homelands are now classified only as state-recognized lands. Their histories, contributions, and cultural legacies remain deeply woven into the fabric of this region. We extend our respect to both federally and non-federally recognized tribes, including all Indigenous peoples present with us today, and to the ancestors whose lives and traditions have shaped this land. We recognize the forced displacement and the enduring challenges faced by Indigenous communities. As an institution and as individuals, we are committed to fostering meaningful relationships with local Tribal nations through collaborative partnerships, educational efforts, and cultural engagement. This land acknowledgment is a gesture of respect and gratitude, and a commitment to truth and ongoing learning. We believe that recognizing the past—and the continued presence of Indigenous peoples—is a vital step toward justice, understanding, and reconciliation
